an original store bought kit. The trees that
cover his layout were crafted by him and
members of his family who wanted to join in
Jim’s passion for logging railroads. The
main bulk of the layout is 8 x 17 x 24 feet,
with a peninsula that adds another 3.5 x 7
feet.
When you first descend into Jim’s base-
ment, you are overwhelmed by the feeling of
being submerged deep into logging country.
The walls are covered in antique logging View 4
tools: saws, cant hooks and oxen shoes.
When you first enter the room, you are drawn
to the main body of the layout, but that’s not
where we are going to start.

Off to the right is where our trip is going
to begin, on a farm in rural America. Down
in the gully there is a passenger car that met
its untimely end, crushed and crumpled, the
victim of Jim trying to cure the paint and
