On the lower trackage, we come across a
scratch built snow shed protecting the tracks.
Jim’s layout shows that logging was, and still
is, a dangerous industry. A locomotive sits
crushed, another victim of paint curing gone
awry, a felled tree resting across the top of it.
As the tracks curve off to the left, headed
east, we stumble upon another sawmill. A
slash burner, smaller than the one we came
across on the peninsula, this one in a wig-
wam shape, is hard at work behind the saw-

mill.
The store bought backdrops that Jim
heavily enhanced which surround the entire
layout portrays the west, with earthen hues
and mountain regions. Making a U-turn and
following the back side of the layout, the
scenery doesn’t change at all, it simply flows
from one form of foresting area to another.
Here Jim has built a switchback to gain ac-
cess to the upper level.
