Take your toothpick and dip the tip into the

        flux.

Next, apply the flux to the area where the bot-
tom of the rail fits into the cradle of the joiner,
but only on the outside of the rail. The wheel
flanges on your locomotives and rolling stock
run on the inside of the rail and they depend
on that uninterrupted electrical connection to
        run.

Flux helps to reduce the surface tension be-
tween the solder and the metal, allowing the
melted solder to flow better, creating a more
        even bond.

Next, touch the tip of your hot soldering iron
        to the flux.

Once you’ve done that, touch the tip of the
soldering iron to the tip of your unwound sol-
der. You will only need to retouch the solder-
ing iron to the flux occasionally, not every
time you want to apply the solder. The solder
will instantly melt and transfer itself to the tip
        of your soldering iron.
