With the trees growing right up to the
rails, their foliage hanging over the tracks, the
line moves into Nakomis. Nakomis is a hub
of activity. There is a service shop with a de-
pot above it, next to the tracks. A church
with a brilliant flowering bush sits quiet to-
day, except for the child on the swing in the
tree next to it. Another child flies a kite that
is reminiscent of a simpler time. This isn’t
the first kite he has flown as the handful that
have gotten away sprinkle the trees of Na-
komis. Back in the 1920s, especially in the
rural parts of the country, there was no indoor
plumbing, so this railroad is flush with out-
