The Silver Streak diesel engine was produced by Lionel between 1935 and 1937, during the
Great Depression. The stamped metal painted set was modeled after actual trains like the Pio-
neer Zephyr. Originally released as wind up trains, they were later produced and sold as elec-
tric, with electric motors, and came with an engine, cars, track, and a transformer. There was a
bigger set that included a platform with a mountain background. The sets produced in 1935
were three car sets, with the number of cars increasing to four in 1936 and 1937. The set con-
sisted of No. 1700E engine, one or two No. 1701 coaches, and one No. 1702 observation car.
Paint schemes available were: Hiawatha Orange, Red and Chrome, Armor Yellow, and Silver
and Light Red.
