While Little Obie #1914 was actually
built in 1995, its number reflects the year
that the Memphis Roundhouse, where Lit-
tle Obie #1914 was built, was constructed.
The Little Obies were named after Donald
R. Obie who was the safety director of the
Illinois Central Johnson Yard in Memphis.
Little Obie is powered by a John Deere
Gator 6x4 diesel drivetrain. All accessory
power is derived from a Cummins Onan
diesel generator located underneath the ca-
boose. Weighing in at just under 10,000
lbs., each Little Obie stands at 45’ in length
and 6.5’ tall at its highest point. It is able
to reach speeds of 25 mph, although it is
limited to 10-15 mph when loaded with
passengers.
Little Obie is housed and transported in
a custom built 53’ race car trailer and
pulled by an equally custom built Freight-
liner M2 diesel truck. The trailer has a cus-
tom built rail system, allowing for Little
Obie to be loaded and unloaded in under
five minutes.
