Once again, Volume 1 of The Milwau-
kee Road Steam Era in Wisconsin is avail-
able for purchase. The Milwaukee Road
was second in railway mileage in its na-
tive state of Wisconsin operating 1,897.67
miles at its maximum from 1914-17, sur-
passed only by the Chicago and North
Western. Its colorful equipment, cutting
edge design and huge shops and yards in
Milwaukee gave the Milwaukee Road a
larger than life presence.
Featuring photos from the Roy Camp-
bell Collection and edited by Thomas E.
Burg, this book follows the Wisconsin
segment of the Milwaukee Road’s Chica-
go – Twin Cities main line, which entered
Wisconsin from Illinois at Ranney and
exited the state when it crossed over the
Mississippi River at La Crosse. This line
