locomotive that was going to be traveling

With heavy machines comes the industry
that created them; the factories, shops and
foundries. Bill would photograph the ma-
chines; raw and pure in functionality, dirty
and worn. He believed each had a purpose
and a story to tell.

Bill’s Train Riding Story
Things certainly were much different in ‘the
good old days.’ Bill wasn’t even old
enough to drive, yet he and his cousin
hatched a plan to go take photos down in
Chicago, IL. Hopping a freight train, like
hobos, they rode all the way down to Chica-
go. While trying to get back on the train
when it was time to head home, they were
caught by the engineer who decided to keep
an eye on the two by putting them in the cab
of the locomotive for the journey back. It
was probably a good thing because if the
Richard Bong Recreation Area 09-06-03 engineer would not have caught them, they
by Bill Bedell would have gotten on the wrong train and
missed their ride home!
