The Inland Port Dillon, the second inland port opened by the South Carolina Ports Authority
th
(SCPA), opened on April 16 . The first inland facility opened by SCPA in 2013, the Inland
Port Greer, saw record breaking traffic in 2017. Inland Port Dillon uses existing CSX inter-
modal service to maintain cargo transit back and forth from the Port of Charleston’s seaport
infrastructure. The port construction spanned just over one year.

Since January, a “poop train” filled with human waste from New York has been stranded just
outside the town of Parrish, Alabama. Bound for Big Sky landfill, which began accepting
New York sewer waste in 2017, the train got stranded outside of Parrish when a nearby town
gained a legal injunction to keep the sludge from entering the township. The town of Parrish
does not have the legal zoning regulations to keep the sludge out of the town, so the cars are
now being stored there.
A federal law in the 1980s prohibits dumping of human waste into the ocean, so other outlets
were found to dispose of the waste. Officials are optimistic that the cars will be moved before
the hottest part of summer arrive and actions are being taken to ensure situations like this don’t
arise in the future.
